How to Obtain a Vietnamese Motorcycle Driver's License
Drivers seeking a new driving license in Vietnam must pass both a written and practical driving test. The driver must first complete theoretical training (costing roughly 400,000 VND) before taking the exam. Once admitted, the aspiring driver will take a theoretical test (auto 450 questions, motorcycle 150).
The bad news is that the training and exam are only available in Vietnamese. The good news is that this is avoidable.
If you have legalized your driving license in Vietnam, as indicated in the first section, and want to get A, you are excused from giving up the theoretical component.
If you do not have a driver's license, you must pass the exam based on theory.
The following documents must be prepared:
a. 6 photos in color [3X4]
b. Notarized passport copy
c. Previously legalized category B rights in Vietnam
d. Your passport
e. VISA or residency card valid for at least three months
You must go to the Transport Department with these documents. There, you will be given a form to fill out in Vietnamese.
Also, the applicant must undergo a simple physical examination and an eye test. You will be given a driving schedule after a medical exam, and asked to select a time that is suitable for you. When you have paid all the necessary fees, you will be given a receipt that will serve as an admission to the exam.
The originals of your documents at this stage will be returned to you. On the exam date, return to the Department of Transportation, take your passport, Vietnamese driver's license and resident card with you if you have one.
The exam takes about 15 minutes. A motorcycle will be provided to you to use throughout the exam.
You will receive exam results after 10 working days by SMS to your phone (in Vietnamese).
The card is issued after 5 working days. You will be asked to come and collect your new driver’s license on the specified date.
According to the experience of obtaining a driver's license, the attitude towards foreigners is quite loyal. You get a driver's license without an expiration date.
Costs:
- Driver license issuance fee: 135,000 VND
- Exam cost: 90,000 VND
- Medical Commission: 160,000 VND.
